  • Eight foods account for 90 percent of all reactions: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish.

  • Even trace amounts of a food allergen can cause a reaction.

  • Keep it simple. Avoid complicated meals on a menu, order simple fare like a baked potato.

  • Avoid fried or grilled foods. Both areas are ripe for cross-contact.

  • Desserts and bread=easy sources of hidden allergens. Both are often made by specialty shops without ingredient lists or packaging. If in doubt, wait and have a safe dessert at home.
